KOCHI: L. Murukan, Vice Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, said after a visit to various SC colonies in the district that basic infrastructure in the colonies should improve. A State-level review meet will be held in August to assess the development needs of SC colonies.

Mr. Murukan toured the Elanthikkara Harijan colony near Puthanvelikkara, Kannancheri colony at Thrikkakara, Vadavukodu, Madathilakam, and the Model Residential School at Keezhmadu. He also received petitions from aggrieved people.

He said there should be better roads, drinking water, power, and better-made houses in the colonies. Measures should be taken to improve the living standards of the people. The meeting in August will also evaluate utilisation of funds allocated for the development and welfare of SCs.
