The salaries of contract and daily wage employees at Government Medical College, Ernakulam, have been revised with retrospective effect from April 1, 2016. The government had brought out an order in January 2017 revising their salaries, said a release.

The Government Order released on Friday by the Health Minister will help 315 employees working as attendants, cleaners, drivers, office assistants, and technicians.

The press release said that the wages had been specially considered for service without break and experience.

However, the BMS union, which had struck work on Monday demanding that the government regularise all employees who had been appointed by the Cooperative Academy of Professional Education, said in a statement that the government move was half-hearted as the demand was for regularising the employees recruited as part of the takeover of the medical college in 2013. Besides, the wage revision should have been effected from the year of takeover, it added.

The decision to revise salaries has a political motive, which is to keep contract and daily wage employees of other unions from joining BMS, which is the only union taking up their cause, BMS union secretary Dr. Bibin Jeevan said.
