Road works in State to be reviewed tomorrow

An amount of Rs.63.6 crore has been spent on repair of Sabarimala roads.

Public Works Minister V. K. Ibrahim Kunju has said a 50 point programme has been charted by the department. Several programmes have already begun. A review of the State-level programme would be held here on January 3, he said.

The Minister said the repair work of national highways and PWD roads have been completed.

In addition to the budget outlay of Rs.470 crore, an expenditure of Rs.314.5 crore has been incurred for the work.

The road surface maintenance work will be completed by May. A total of Rs.157.96 crore has been allotted to the five corporations for road maintenance work which will be completed by May.

An amount of Rs.63.6 crore has been spent on repair of Sabarimala roads. A pilgrim centre will be constructed at Ranni. It is expected to cost Rs.11 crore. The e-tendering facility, already in force, will be extended to more areas.

He said sanction has been given for road works worth Rs.1,308 crore in the State. The government has initiated procedures to upgrade 8,570 km of roads before these roads are taken over by the Public Works department.

A green building policy is being formulated and approval is being expected. A scheme for renovation of 45 rest houses involving an expenditure of Rs.6.75 crore has been sanctioned.

Road Fund Board's scheme for city development is being taken up in Thiruvananthapuram. Similar schemes will be taken up in Kochi and Kozhikode.

The first phase of land acquisition programme for the project is nearing completion in Kozhikode while the land acquisition in Kochi is in progress.

The study report on the mono rail project for Kozhikode is ready. A financial feasibility report is to be prepared. About 25 km of road along the seaport-airport will be concretised, on an experimental basis. The expenditure on road safety will be included in the maintenance estimate.

The first phase of maintenance work on the road of 283 km, under KSTP, will begin this month.

The retarring is being done with five-year guarantee. The expenditure will be Rs.93.6 crore, he said.
