The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has registered a suo motu case against the management of a private school in Kochi for allegedly forcing a five-year-old boy to clean up his own vomit.

According to SHRC Acting Chairperson P. Mohana Das, the case is being registered following media reports on the incident. “If the reports are true, this is nothing but a blatant violation of child rights tantamount to human rights. It is unheard of that a teacher has treated his/her student in such an inhuman way,” the human rights commission noted.

It also asked the District Police Chief (DPC) to register a case under the provisions of the Juvenile justice Act and relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code. The DPC is also required to file a report on the incident within three weeks.

According to media reports, the child, who was apparently ill, had vomited on the floor and was allegedly forced by his teachers to clean his vomit.
