The State Human Rights Commission has directed the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) to take immediate steps to restore the supply of drinking water in Kaloor and neighbouring areas, which was disrupted after a building collapse last week.

In his order, P. Mohanadas, acting chairperson, KSHRC, sought the instantaneous intervention of KWA’s Managing Director in the issue.

Directions have also been issued to the District Collector, District Police Chief and Secretary of the corporation to this effect. Observing that the KWA had failed to initiate appropriate action despite a flurry of complaints by city residents, the commission accused the authority officials of showing criminal negligence towards the concerns of the public. A report on the action initiated should be submitted before the commission within two weeks.

The case will be heard during the Commission’s next sitting in Ernakulam.
