Residents block road over water scarcity

January 27, 2013 04:29 am | Updated 04:29 am IST - Kochi:

Residents of the 10th ward of the Thrikkakara Municipality blocked the road at Athani in Kakkanad on Saturday in protest against the scarcity of water in the area. Local residents, including women and children, sat down on the road from 11.30 a.m. demanding better water supply.

Councillor Rejimol Mathai said the ward had been experiencing water scarcity for more than a month. Pipes in the hilly area broke easily when the water authority increased the pumping pressure. The pipelines would all have to be changed to ensure efficient supply, she said.

The residents ended their protest in the afternoon after an assistant executive engineer of the Kerala Water Authority assured them that supply would be resumed from Monday. Water was also supplied in a tanker lorry in the evening.
