Work has begun on renovating the 48-year-old crematorium at Pachalam at a cost of Rs. 1 crore.

The money has been allotted from MLA fund by Hibi Eden, who inaugurated the work on Saturday at a brief function.

Kochi Corporation Mayor Tony Chammany presided over the function.

T. N. Chandrika, councillor, said the crematorium was badly in need of renovation. The new work involves building two gas-based crematoriums and one that will use wood. A burial place for infants and children would also be developed alongside the new crematoriums, she added.

A hall which can seat around 150 people and where condolence meetings could be organised will be part of the new complex.
