Reading Week rolled out

June 20, 2013 01:14 am | Updated 01:14 am IST - KOCHI:

District panchayat president Eldhose Kunnappillil said reading alone would help develop a good culture and ensure the social development of the country.

Inaugurating the district-level inauguration of reading week observation at the SRV High School here on Wednesday, Mr. Kunnappillil said the love for language and extensive reading habits of the older generation were the reasons behind the “high cultural standard prevailing in the State.”

“The notion that reading is in death bed is wrong. It has only changed with the modern times. That’s one of the reasons why even elders have turned to online reading. Mr. Kunnappillil exhorted students to dedicate at least two hours a day for reading.

The Cochin International Book Festival committee donated children’s literature worth Rs. 2,500 to 300 schools in the district as part of reading week observation and 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Swami Vivekananda.

Joy Ambat, who has been working in connection with library movements for the last more than 25 years, was honoured on the occasion.
