A day after the brutal murder of a 61-year-old at her house at Puthenvelikkara, the police took the accused, Parimal Sahu aka Munna, 24, to the crime scene for evidence collection.

He was later produced before a local court and was remanded in judicial custody.

During the day, the police grilled Munna, a resident of Assam, during which he was claimed to have committed the crime during an attempt to sexually assault her in an inebriated condition. The deceased was found lying in a pool of blood in the bedroom on the ground floor of the two-storey building.

Earlier in the day, the police also questioned three other migrant labourers who were also tenants of the outhouse where the accused stayed.

“Though they were taken into custody, all three were set free after we were convinced that they had no role in the crime,” the investigating officer said.

The accused allegedly choked the victim using a turkey towel and then smashed her head with rocks collected from outside when she resisted his advances. He had entered the house around 1.30 a.m. on Sunday when the victim answered the door bell. He reportedly pushed her inside and tried to sexually assault her.

The police collected evidence such as the turkey towel and stones used for the murder. The doctor, who conducted the autopsy, further corroborated his involvement in the crime after finding injury marks on the accused’s body reportedly caused when the victim resisted the attempted sexual assault.
