Protection sought for SNDP poll

July 23, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - KOCHI:

A writ petition was filed on Wednesday seeking police protection for the smooth conduct of the general body meeting of the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam scheduled on August 9.

The petition was filed by A. Mohanan and another person from Kollam.

They alleged that SNDP general secretary Vellappally Natesan was keen to maintain the post. He was very affluent, influential, and willing to go any extent to wrest the post.

Petitioners’ concern

The petitioners feared that a law and order situation would be created by the henchmen of Mr. Natesan at the polling stations with ulterior motive to see that many of the voters did not exercise their franchise. Therefore, adequate police protection was required.

They pointed out that in the 2004 elections, the High Court had appointed two retired district judges to oversee the election process.

The petitioner also sought to appoint a senior member of the High Court Bar to oversee the entire election proceedings.
