The Kerala State Human Rights Commission (KHRC) on Monday directed the Ernakulam Rural police to probe the alleged illegal detention of a law student by her relatives.

Acting on a complaint by the victim’s friend,, KSHRC Acting Chairman P. Mohana Das directed the Superintendent of Police, Ernakulam Rural, to assign an officer of Deputy Superintendent rank to probe the matter and file a report. The report will be taken up for consideration during the next sitting of the Commission in Ernakulam on April 16.

The victim, a final semester law student from Perumbavoor, has not been attending classes for the past several days. With the ongoing semester set to conclude by March 31, she may not be able to write the final examinations for lack of attendance.

The complainant alleged that the victim’s relatives were planning to marry her off at the earliest while the woman wanted to complete her study. The victim’s health condition had worsened under detention, the petition said.
