August 31, 2017 01:20 am | Updated 08:16 am IST - KOCHI:

Taking serious note of reports of a private hospital in the city “treating” a dead body, the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has directed the State Police Chief to launch a probe against private hospitals in this regard.

The step follows the revelation by a police surgeon in Kochi. “The probe should cover all districts, and the final report should be submitted within four weeks,” the SHRC said. Besides the police, the Health Secretary has been directed to probe the allegation and submit a report.

The case pertains to the revelation by the police surgeon at the Government Medical College here that a private hospital at Palarivattom had treated the body of a 33-year-old person a few hours after death.

According to SHRC Acting Chairman P. Mohanadas, further action against the hospital will be initiated on the basis of the investigation reports.

He also called for the enactment of legislation to prevent private hospitals from cheating people.

The commission had earlier initiated a probe into the alleged fleecing of patients by various private hospitals across the State.
