Preschooler injured in Maradu accident dies

Death caused due to fluid accumulation in the lungs

One more child who had sustained injuries in the accident involving a school van in Maradu died at a private hospital in Kochi on Sunday, taking the total number of deaths in the tragedy to four.

Hospital sources said five-year-old Carol Joby, who had been admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital since June 11, succumbed to injuries around 1.25 p.m. on Sunday. The body will be handed over to relatives by Monday after completing the inquest proceedings.

Hospital sources attributed the death to pulmonary edema, resulting from fluid accumulation in the lungs. Carol had also suffered a major brain injury and was on ventilator support all these days.

The accident, which took place on June 11, had claimed the lives of toddlers Adithyan S. Nair and Vidya Lekshmi, and ayah Latha Unni.
