With the electronic ‘eye’ of the Motor Vehicle Department on the blink at Vyttila junction for some months now, those who violate motor rules are having it easy.
Vyttila, one of the the busiest traffic junctions in the State, has been out of the radar of the MVD’s surveillance camera for close to five months now. The road at the junction had been dotted with potholes for a while now exposing the underground cables of the surveillance camera to the movement of vehicles passing through the junction every day.
MVD sources told The Hindu that the department had no other option but to disconnect the camera compromising its enforcement drive. “We had issued at least two reminders to the National Highways Authority of India, but the situation hasn’t improved,” an official said.
The absence of camera at Vyttila junction means that there is not a single surveillance camera of the MVD in the stretch between Kariyad near Nedumbassery and Kundannoor.
Though there is a camera at Kalamassery, its functioning has been affected by the Kochi Metro works, the officer said.
