The Cochin Port Trust has mooted a 57-acre hospitality hub at the southern tip of Wellingdon Island which has waterfront on two sides.
The site was not suitable for shipping-related activities, sources in the agency said on the sidelines of eight edition of Kerala Travel Mart 2014 under way at Samudrika Convention Centre in Wellingdon Island.
“We plan to tender the project in three months,” said traffic manager Unnikrishnan Nair.
The proposal is in line with the recent directive issued by Union Minister for Shipping Nitin Gadkari for better usage of land at Mumbai Port for promotion of port-based tourism projects.
The 57-acre plot that abuts NH 49 is suited for hospitality, leisure and tourism-based projects, which include luxury hotels, oceanarium, water sports complex, food courts, gardens, walkway, entertainment arcades, open promenade with artificial beach, health spas etc., says a release issued by the port.
The port would offer land on open tender basis on lease for a 30-year period.
The project could also touted as an answer to Kochiites’ demand for open space.
