Policeman wanted for trafficking surrenders

After being on the run for long and failing to win anticipatory bail, Civil Police Officer A.P. Ajeeb wanted in a case for illegal trafficking surrendered before the Crime Branch team on Monday.

He was listed as the main accused in the case for human trafficking through the Cochin International Airport, but the police in rural district and later Crime Branch could not track him. All payments for the illegal deals were done through accounts operated by his father, A..S. Pareed.

Opposing his bail petition, the police had filed an affidavit at the court that he could be a link in a racket involving many senior police officials. The agency also raised suspicions that some of those who crossed the border using the illegal gates operated by Ajeeb’s racket could have links with anti-nationals.

Ajeeb went on medical leave from Nedumbassery police station and then into hiding following a report by N.V. Somarajan, Assistant Commissioner, Immigration, that listed him along with 14 others as involved in illegal activities. A case was registered on the basis of this report in December last, which was later transferred to the Crime Branch.

The accused will be produced before the court on Tuesday and it is learnt that the Crime Branch will move the court to get custody of the CPO for further inquiry into the case.
