The police seem clueless about those behind the increasing incidents of tree felling along the National Highway 47 bypass.
As many as five trees on the median close to the Palarivattom traffic signal faced the axe on Monday adding to the unresolved cases of rampant removal of green cover along the route. National Highways Authority of India project director C. T. Abraham said police have not been able to track the offenders despite his office lodging several complaints of tree felling earlier.
Greens blame the advertisement agencies for tree felling as they want better visibility for the flex boards erected on either sides of the national highway. They also alleged that it was often done in connivance with the monitoring agencies including the police.
Palarivattom police said a few autorickshaw drivers had complained about tree felling in the area. But those could not be called trees considering their size and that only a few branches were pruned, they said.
