As the probe in the rape and murder of a Dalit law student draws to a close, the police have also sought to put an end to many stories that did the rounds in connection with the case.
The department categorically denied that the accused had been in acquaintance with the victim prior to the murder. They also turned down earlier reports that the main accused was aided by another person and that the police fudged crucial evidence at the initial stage.
“The theories of one Anarul instigating Ameerul and aiding in the crime are completely baseless. Similarly, the fingerprints of another person found at the crime site were found to be old and not connected with the case,” said P.N. Unnirajan, Ernakulam Rural Superintendent.
He also refuted reports of the victim going outside and having food from a hotel. Besides, she never had any relationship with the accused or knew him previously, he added.
When asked whether the cops initially fudged crucial evidence by failing to cordon off the crime scene, the officer said though there were a few links missing initially, the investigation team did a good job and collected all vital evidence so as to make the case strong before the court.
“Also the reports of the accused having a gap on the front row of teeth are not true. The bite marks on the victim’s body were not fully revealed. But this might be because the accused must have bit over the victim’s dress,” he said.
A crucial mistake
Meanwhile, a top official said that the charge sheet would also shed light on the embarrassing slip-ups in earlier investigation.
According to him, the earlier team failed in guarding the crime scene, which was a crucial mistake. “They could have done it in a better way. Guarding the crime scene helped us nab a person who brutally murdered a woman near Kottayam, in just two days,” the official, who played a key role in coordinating the investigation, said. “As the earlier investigation drew blank after a certain point, we had to go through the basics right from the beginning once again and the criminal just popped out,” he added.
