The police registered a case against Agriculture Minister K.P. Mohanan and 500 identifiable workers of the Socialist Janata (Democratic) workers for obstructing roads in connection with a public function near Panur to commemorate the Minister’s late father and former Minister P.R. Kurup.

The Kolavallur police registered the case against the Minister and the party functionaries under sections 143 (unlawful assembly) and 283 read with 149 (obstructing public road) for taking out a procession at Puthur near Panur on January 17 evening. The Minister was among the party leaders who led the procession in connection with the death anniversary of the late leader. The procession was followed by a public function at Puthur. The police said that the road traffic was completely obstructed by the procession.

Meanwhile, the police also registered a case in connection with the recovery of a country-made bomb from near the venue of the public function held near the Kunnothuparamba panchayat office. The bomb had been found near the dais before the function began. Mr. Mohanan and SJD leader M.P. Veerendrakumar were among the leaders who addressed the gathering at the function. According to the police, the bomb had been recovered after it was found by the organisers of the function. The police later defused the bomb.

The area was earlier known for political tension due to clashes between rival workers of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh workers. The unearthing of the country-made bomb before the public function began averted possibility of its accidental explosion, the police said.
