The Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court on Wednesday extended the remand period of Ameerul Islam, accused in the murder of a Dalit law student in Perumbavoor, till July 27.
P. Rajan, counsel for the accused, requested that Ameerul be permitted to interact with his family members. Following this, judge N.Anil Kumar directed the counsel to submit a separate petition on this.
The police, in its remand petition, submitted that the accused should not be granted bail as he would go into hiding upon being released. The petition said that Ameerul had a lot of acquaintances in States such as Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Assam.
The trial in the murder case was transferred on Tuesday to the Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court, the special court for cases under the Scheduled Caste and the Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Alongside, the authorities have also handed over all documents and material evidences relating to the case to the court.
Ameerul was brought to the court here after being produced in the Kuruppampady Judicial First Class Magistrate earlier in the day. He had been taken to the Kuruppampady court on a production warrant in a case of bestiality (sex with animals).
Meanwhile, officials are likely to seek Ameerul’s custody in connection with the bestiality case once again.
