The city police took into custody the anti-LPG terminal agitators, who reached the High Court junction, to register their protest on Friday.
The police had clocked the city with several layers of protection on the day in the wake of the arrival of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to launch the Kochi metro. The sudden eruption of protest in the city caught the police off-guard. A section of the local residents have been protesting against the setting up of the LPG terminal in Puthuvypeen, a thickly populated region.
Those who were taken into custody stayed in the police station and refused to go on bail. Earlier in the day, the police had used force to disperse the protesters from the site at Puthuvypeen.
Protesting against the police action, a section of the agitators moved to the city to air their grievance. They have also planned a protest meeting at Goshree Junction on Saturday against the police action.
Meanwhile, the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, which is setting up the LPG Terminal, said its contractors had complained of losing goods, including computers and laptops, worth over ₹4 lakh from the project site.
A contractor also filed a complaint at the Njarakkal police station in this regard.
