The district unit of the Kerala Viswakarma Sabha will hold a dharna before Aluva Head Post Office on Wednesday demanding, among other things, that 2011 census should be conducted on the basis of caste.
The Sabha will hold dharnas before all head post offices in the State as part of its efforts to highlight its demands.
The Sabha has said that there was no logic in insisting that census would not be conducted on the basis of caste.
The District President of the Sabha T. K. Ramakrishnan told a press conference here on Monday that a caste-based census should be followed by implementation of reservation in education and jobs for the Vishwakarma community, numbering around 43 lakh people in the State.
The State government had recognised Vishwakarma as a community of traditional artisans.
However, the community had not received any benefits from this recognition, said Mr. Ramakrishnan.
Among the other demands raised by the community are: Provision for old age pension; allocation of land in industrial areas for members of the community to launch new enterprises; allocation of rice at Rs. two a kg for the community members working in the unorganised sector.
