11 seats to be available in final round of counselling

The impasse over the allotment of seats to postgraduate courses in the Ernakulam Medical College (EMC) has been finally resolved.

Students appearing for the final round of online counselling for medical postgraduate courses will have 11 more seats to choose from with the Kerala Commissioner of Entrance Examinations (CEE) deciding to include the college in the Central Allotment Process (CAP) starting next week. “Based on the letter of permission (LOP) from the Union Health Ministry, a government order was issued on Tuesday and has been handed over to the Commissioner of Entrance Examinations,” said V.Geetha, Director of Medical Education, adding that counselling for the seats is scheduled to be held on the two days starting from this Sunday. Meanwhile, Commissioner of Entrance Examinations B.S. Mavoji confirmed the receipt of letter and government order on the status of new postgraduate courses in the EMC and said that the seats would be included while publishing the net vacant seats for the final round of counselling.

As per the Letter of Permission, the medical college will have three seats in general medicine and two each in paediatrics, psychiatry, pathology and microbiology. The 11 seats were sanctioned earlier this year and later they were listed as approved on the website of the Medical Council of India (MCI) as well.

The medical college, which had received the Letter of Intent in April, could not include the postgraduate seats in the general pool because of the delay in receiving the LoP from the Union Ministry for Health. The letter had asked the medical college authorities to report all the corrections made after the inspection by the MCI and to indicate whether the college had a university affiliation. The college authorities said the necessary corrections were made and queries were answered promptly.
