Rajasekharan Nair, 73, accused in the case of sexual abuse of a minor at Paravur, was found hanging at his house near Njarackal on Saturday, just two days before the Ernakulam District Sessions Court was to pronounce the verdict in the case.
Rajasekharan’s body, hanging in the hall of his house at Elamkunnapuzha, was found by his son around 7 p.m.
The son told the police that his father had been asleep when he left the house around 3.30 p.m. “From our preliminary investigation, it is clear that he committed suicide. His son said he was under pressure as the verdict is scheduled for Monday,” said a police officer. The court was originally set to pronounce its judgement in the case on June 5, but postponed it to Monday as Rajasekharan did not turn up on the day.
He had allegedly paid Rs. 50,000 to the parents of the minor from Paravur and sexually abused her at her house repeatedly between June 2009 and April 2010. The girl’s father has been convicted of abusing her and selling her for prostitution. Separate cases have been registered for different instances when the girl was abused. The court has already pronounced judgment in three cases relating to abuse of the girl. The police have arrested more than 100 persons in this case, which included a police officer, actor, filmmaker and leading businessmen, besides the parents of the girl. The body of Rajasekharan was shifted to the General Hospital for post-mortem examination.
