The sub-committee appointed to look into the issues pertaining to the reclamation of land for the metro maintenance yard at Muttom has prepared a package to mitigate the inconvenience caused by its construction.
According to the Kochi Metro Rail Limited, the sub-committee comprising representatives of the all the stakeholders involved, including representatives of the Kalamassery and Aluva municipalities and Choornikkara Panchayat, has finalised the plan of action to be taken to address the environmental mitigation problems pertaining to the yard.
The package provides for the construction of a makeshift drain along the western boundary, and a concrete drain later in addition to the deepening and cleaning of the existing canal on the eastern side. Further, decisions with regard to providing pipe culverts, re-arranging of water pipelines and cleaning of choked culverts have been also made.
The committee was formed to suggest short-term and long-term measures for addressing the issue. The committee assessed the impact of land filling operations on the project site by holding site inspections and interacting with residents of the region.
