Opposition points finger at Mayor; disrupts proceedings

August 25, 2013 01:55 am | Updated 01:55 am IST - KOCHI:

The Corporation Council meeting held here on Saturday was disrupted after opposition councillors stalled the proceedings alleging that the Mayor had failed to respond positively to different civic issues raised by them.

The opposition had raised issued like the dire financial situation of the civic body, disruption of salary payment for workers employed in garbage removal, pending payment to contractors and the bad condition of many leading roads in the city, among others.

Unrelenting stand

Even though Mayor Tony Chammany said that a special council would be convened on September 4 to discuss the financial condition of the corporation, the opposition members were not willing to accept the offer.

The Congress councillors belonging to the ‘I’ faction, led by T.J. Vinod and Thampy Subramaniam, also protested the move by corporation officials to record in minutes that the faction members boycotted last council meeting. This step could even invite action under the anti-defection law, they said.

Discussion disrupted

Pointing out that many special councils convened earlier failed to bring in the desired effect, the opposition councillors disrupted the Mayor’s reply to the discussions.

The discussions were started by K.J. Jacob, leader of opposition.

Councillors Lino Jacob, M. Anil Kumar, K.N. Sunil Kumar, K.V. Manoj, Sojan Antony, C.A. Shakeer, N.A. Shafeeq, M.P. Mahesh Kumar and A.R. Padmadas participated in the discussions.
