The opposition councillors of the Kochi Corporation have demanded an emergency meeting of the council to discuss the recent flooding in the city.

They raised the demand through a letter to the Kochi Mayor. They submitted a signed letter by invoking the provisions of the Kerala Municipalities Act which says that council meeting shall be convened if one-third of the total strength of the house demands it through a signed letter, said a statement issued by V.P. Chandran, parliamentary party secretary of the CPI(M).

Meanwhile, a statement issued by Mayor Soumini Jain said a special meeting of the council would be held on June 13 at 10 a.m. to discuss the issue. The meeting would be followed by a regular council on June 14, the statement said.

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) accused the Mayor of running away from key issues. The previous council meeting was on May 10. The collection and removal of refuse from the city have also been hit. There were serious lapses in submitting the annual plan projects of the corporation for the approval of the District Planning Committee, the statement said.

LDF leaders K.J. Antony, Mr. Chandran, Poornima Narayanan, Benedict Fernandez, C.K. Peter and Antony Francis submitted the letter to the Mayor and the Secretary of the local body.
