The Aluva West police on Sunday arrested a 43-year-old woman on charge of attempting to swindle money out of people by promising selection for their children in a national-level cricket tournament.

According to officials, the accused has been identified as Nasrath Shahabuddhin of Shah Manzil, a native of Nalanchira in Thiruvananthapuram. She was taken into custody on Saturday evening when she reached Aluva to collect money from the parents of four children in Karumallur, who were said to have been selected for a tournament in Jodhpur. The arrest was based on a complaint lodged by the parent of one of the children. As per the complaint, the woman asked the selected children to give her Rs. 25,000 each to meet their travel and accommodation expenses.

The woman, claiming to be the State co-ordinator of Indian Twenty 20 Cricket Federation, had earlier advertised in newspapers about the conduct of selection trials and selected 13 teenagers in the trials held in North Paravur, officials said, adding that the accused failed to produce any authorisation letter to verify the claim.

A follow-up investigation is on to trace others involved in the racket, if any.
