Kalamassery police on Wednesday arrested a person in connection with an attempt to murder a 24-year-old youth by hacking him during a drunken brawl at Kalamassery on April 15.

The accused has been identified as Sreerag, 34, a resident of the Glass Factory Colony at Kalamassery.

The police had earlier unearthed a CCTV footage of the alleged drunken brawl where a youth was seen getting hacked on his leg.

A probe is on to trace the accused including the person who hacked the victim, identified as Eldhose, son of George. According to the police, the youth has been severely injured in the attack and has undergone a surgery.

The delay in arresting the accused in the case had drawn much protest from the victim’s family, who alleged the police of inaction. According to them, the victim was helping another person who had been in an inebriated condition. The accused picked up a fight with Eldhose without any provocation and fled the scene after hacking him using a machete.

Police’s claim

The police, on the other hand, maintained that the victim could identify only one person, who had already been arrested.

“An FIR was lodged based on a complaint with non-bailable charges including attempt to murder. Following this, raids were held even at house of relatives of the suspects but to no avail,” they said.
