A CBI court here on Saturday remanded Mailakkattu Varghese Uthuppu, the prime accused in the muti-crore nurses recruitment scam, for 14 days.

In CBI custody

Uthuppu had been in the custody of the CBI since Thursday evening in connection with the case.

The case against Uthuppu, proprietor of Al-Zarafa Travels and Manpower Consultants, was that he, along with the then Protector of Emigrant (POE) L. Adolfus, and six others, had entered into a criminal conspiracy and charged ₹19.5 lakh as service charge from nursing recruits instead of ₹19,500 recommended by the Ministry of Overseas Affairs.

Investigations revealed that Uthuppu and his company had collected ₹117 crore from 1,291 persons recruited to the Ministry of Health, Kuwait, between December 29, 2014, and March 25, 2015.
