None could drive ‘Saranya’ slow

The accident at Puthenkavu on Friday throws light on the rash and reckless ways of private bus drivers in the district.

The driver of Saranya, the over-speeding bus that caused the accident on Friday, is notorious for his recklessness. Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) officials from the Thripunithura Joint Regional Transport Office, who inspected the scene of the accident, put the onus on the driver of Saranya.

“Besides suspending the licence of the driver, we will move the Regional Transport Authority for suspension of permit for the bus, citing its dubious record,” Thripunithura Joint RTO K. Manoj Kumar said.

Udayamperoor Sub-Inspector K.T. Sukumaran said the previous driver of the bus too was infamous for his reckless ways, which had led to multiple accidents. “The licence of the driver was suspended. But, somehow, everyone who is engaged as driver in this particular bus resorts to over-speeding,” he said.

Udayamperoor panchayat president John Jacob said people were constantly under fear, thanks to over-speeding by private buses, especially those on the Ernakulam-Kottayam route. “We are about to take up the issue with the MVD and the police to keep a check on those buses and to ensure that they comply with all legal requirements, including installation of speed governor,” he said.
