The State Pollution Control Board (PCB) on Thursday informed a Division Bench of the Kerala High Court that the garbage treatment plant at Vilappilsala did not have a valid consent of the board.
In a report filed before the Bench, PCB Environmental Engineer K.R. Santhosh Kumar who visited the plant said he found that rejects after processing of municipal solid wastes were dumped at three locations on the plant premises.
Pollution
This could generate leachate, especially during monsoon, causing pollution.
Mr. Kumar had inspected the plant in the wake of a High Court directive to assess its condition and study the feasibility of running such a unit.
No proper system
The Pollution Control Board said there was no scientific system for collection and treatment of leachate. in the plant
The suggestions of the Pollution Control Board to provide curtain wall on the lower most portion of capped area so as to collect the leachate were not taken much note of by the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.
The Pollution Control Board report also said the leachate collection and treatment facility now at the plant was incomplete and it should be completed, as there was chance of water getting polluted during rainy season.
