NIA to probe Maoist attack on policeman

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the probe into Maoist attack on a civil police officer at Vellamunda of Wayanad district in April last.

According to an official statement, cases have been registered against four members of the CPI (Maoist), who had trespassed into the house of A. B. Pramod, a senior civil police officer attached to the Vellamunda station. Based on an order issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs dated December 14, 2015, the Kochi unit of NIA reregistered the case on January 2.

The Kerala Police had registered the case at Vellamunda police station on April 25, 2015.

The case has been registered under Sections 143, 147, 148, 452, 427, 506 (II), 435, 124A and 149 of IPC and Section 25 of Arms Act and Sections 10, 13, 19 and 20 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

As per the case, cadres of the CPI(Maoist) trespassed into the house of Mr. Pramod, trained their guns on him and threatened to kill him. The team further asked Mr. Pramod to resign from his job. They also set afire his motorcycle, causing a loss of around Rs.30,000.

The team also made a call for an armed rebellion, affecting the integrity of the State.

Roopesh, a senior Maoist leader from Kerala, is one of the accused in the case while the identity of others is yet to be confirmed.
