The police on Tuesday dug out the body of a new born baby, which had been found buried at Choorakad near Thripunithura on Tuesday. A case has been registered against its mother in connection with the incident.

According to the police, the infant was the child of Pradeep and Swapna of Pothiparambil house, Choorakad. Preliminary investigations revealed that Swapna had given birth to the baby in the toilet of her house on Monday noon.

“The autopsy report revealed that the baby had died of head injuries. We suspect the infant might have sustained these injuries while the mother gave birth in the toilet. A case has been registered under Section 318 IPC (Concealment of birth by secret disposal of dead body) against the mother,” officials said.

The woman is currently under treatment in a local hospital after she had suffered heavy bleeding. “She will be subjected to interrogation along with her close relatives. Based on the finding, additional charges will be included,” the officer said. The couple have two other sons, the elder one studying in the 5th standard and the younger one in UKG. The incident came to light when Pradeep returned home from work on Monday evening to find his wife bleeding and took her to the hospital. At the hospital, Swapna admitted to the doctors that she had delivered a boy and cut off the umbilical chord herself. The body of the infant is kept in the mortuary of the Thripunithura Taluk Hospital after autopsy.
