The long-standing demand for a police station at Elamakkara is set to be reality soon with the State Cabinet approving the proposal for the new station.
“The Cabinet approved the proposal for a station at Elamakkara on Wednesday. The Home Department will soon notify the station with 25 new posts,” said MLA Hibi Eden.
City Police Commissioner K.G. James said the procedures for setting up the station could go ahead once the Home Department issued the notification. The notification will demarcate the area that will come under the new police station limits based on the recommendations made by the city police earlier. The notification will also order the redefinition of police station limits from which the Elamakkara station will be carved out.
The new police station is expected to be carved out of the Kalamassery, Palarivattom and Ernakulam Town North police station limits. A major portion of the new station will be from the Kalamassery police station limit, which is currently the largest in the city. The new police station is expected to cover an area of 12 sq.km., with a population of about 63,000 people.
Sources said parts of the Edappally South, Edappally North, and Elamkulam Villages, coming under the Kanayannur taluk would come under the new police station. It is expected to cover the part of Elamakkara to the south of the railway line, Chuttupadukara, Karukappilly junction, to the west of Changadampokkuthode, parts of Ponekkara to the south of the railway line, Edappally, and part of the region from Pottakkuzhi to Karukappilly junction.
The commissioner had prepared a report in October 2012 with recommendations for the formation of the new station. The report noted that the nearest police station from the proposed station area was 6 km away at Kalamassery. The new station would eliminate the need for the police to bear heavy city traffic to reach the area. It is also expected to make police patrolling easier with more staff available.
