Edappally, Palarivattom flyovers to open on June 30

Work on Vyttila and Kundanoor flyovers to begin in September

May 31, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 07:36 am IST - KOCHI:

The flyovers at Edappally and Palarivattom will be opened to traffic on June 30, considerably easing traffic movement through the two NH junctions.

PWD Secretary A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, who reviewed progress of works on the flyovers a week ago, said that the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) was confident of completing the Edappally flyover by June 30. The Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala (RBDCK) is scheduled to ready the Palarivattom flyover by the same date, he said.

Currently, concreting of slabs is underway over the 35-metre-long central girders of the Palarivattom flyover. Widening and developing around 400 metres of the junction on the Palarivattom and Alinchuvadu sides, though scheduled to be taken up alongside the flyover work, has been postponed. It is now expected to be taken up as part of the preparatory works for Kochi Metro’s Kakkanad extension, when roads on the 11-km-long metro corridor will be widened to 22 metres.

In Edappally, the two-lane portion of the flyover on the northern side is ready, while that on the southern side is nearing completion.

About a year ago, DMRC’s Principal Advisor E. Sreedharan had suggested an underpass linking Edappally-Aroor NH 47 bypass and NH 17, to further streamline the traffic flow. The State government is yet to take a call on this.

The construction of the Vyttila and Kundanoor is yet to begin though then Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had laid the foundation stone in February.

“The chief technical examiner of the Finance Department scrutinised the project and suggested a few minor changes.

Tenders to be invited

The tender for the two structures will be invited in a month, following which work will be awarded by mid-August. Piling and related activities will begin from September,” Mr. Hanish said.

The two structures are expected to be completed by March 2018.

In the meantime, the RBDCK has completed 90 per cent work on the Eroor overbridge.

The structure is slated to be opened to traffic by July end, he said.
