KOCHI: The renovated domestic terminal at Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) will be opened to passengers by the end of March. The six-lakh-sq-ft terminal has been built at a cost of ₹160 crore. It will have all latest amenities for domestic passengers, said a press release here.

The terminal will have seven aerobridges as well as the latest fire security facilities. The domestic terminal has been developed taking the growth in passenger traffic over the next 20 years into consideration. The terminal has been equipped to handle up to 4,000 passengers an hour.

The work on an expanded and upgraded domestic terminal began as soon as the new international terminal (T3) was commissioned in April this year, the release added. The new terminal will have six times more space than the facility now handling domestic traffic.

The facilities at the terminal have been arranged at three levels.

A total of 2.42 lakh-sq ft space available at the bottom level will house check-in, departure, arrival, and baggage claim areas.

There are 56 check-in counters, while the present domestic terminal has only 29 counters. There will also be canteens, shopping centres, and medical rooms at the bottom level.

The first floor, with a total available space of 2.18 lakh sq ft, will have facilities for security checks as well as aerobridges. Food courts, executive launch, and a bar will be housed at the first level.
