A new and updated register of assets and properties of the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) will be ready in four months.
GCDA Chairman C.N. Mohanan said that a team comprising retired employees of the GCDA was in the process of identifying its properties distributed across its jurisdiction. “Properties identified will be demarcated, fenced and mounted with boards proclaiming the ownership of the GCDA,” he said. The move assumes significance since many prime properties of the GCDA remain either alienated or unidentified without even its own knowledge.
Stadium encroachments
The GCDA is also set to crack down on encroachments at the shopping complex of Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium and rampant subletting by its original lessees even as it collected rent dues to the tune of nearly ₹2.5 crore from various tenants in the shopping complexes at the stadium and Marine Drive till the period ending January 31.
In a shocking incident, a tenant at the shopping complex of the stadium was found to have sublet a room, which he had taken for a monthly rent of ₹6000, for ₹60,000.
Mr. Mohanan said that two marriage auditoriums and a wide corridor in the stadium complex had simply vanished under encroachment. “Notices are being issued to the violators under the Rent Control Act and the encroachments will be demolished once they are heard,” he said.
The walkway at Marine Drive faced three challenges – destruction of its tiled floors and lamps and encroachment of vendors. Mr. Mohanan said that deviation of public properties for purposes other than for which they are meant would not be allowed.
