The Thoppumpady police registered a case against a senior sailor of the Southern Naval Command on charge of burning his sister with an iron box.
The case was registered after the Naval police reported that Muhammad Mukhtar Ansari, 36, a technical hand with the Navy, caused burns on his sister’s arms with an iron box. Ansari, a native of Bihar, was living with his wife at their quarters at Mundamveli. Police said his 21-year-old sister had been living with the family for about a year and was helping out in the household. Ansari allegedly hurt the woman on the evening of February 10 as he was unsatisfied with the way she performed household chores.
Neighbours later found burn marks on the woman’s arms and informed the Naval police. She was admitted to the Navy’s hospital INHS Sanjivani. Police officials visited her on Friday evening to record her statement. “She had burn marks on both her arms below the elbows. She did not report any other incidents of violence against her,” said a police official. The Navy has also ordered an internal inquiry.
