To reduce road accidents in the State, the Motor Vehicles Department launched an automated enforcement control room to monitor the violation of traffic rules from Cherthala to Manjeswaram here on Wednesday.
The facility, opened by Transport Commissioner Rishiraj Singh at the Ernakulam District Collectorate, is being implemented by the Kerala Road Safety Authority with technical support from Keltron. Initially, it will function for eight hours daily and will change to a round-the-clock mode in later stages. According to Rishiraj Singh, 57 cameras have been installed and another 90 cameras are being installed. With this, incidences of overspeeding, violation of traffic signals, overload, helmetless driving and violation of lane traffic could be identified.
The pictures captured by the cameras will be transferred to the control room through broadband network, where the officials will inspect these images and take appropriate action. It also enables monitoring of vehicles at select points along the route. “In the first stage, it will have the capacity to generate notices to as many as 1,600 violators a day, which will be increased to 5,000 once the facility becomes fully operational,” he said.
It will also allow the violator to pay the fine amount at any of the RT offices in the State. To operate the system on a 24X7 basis, the MVD plans to have a team of 24 executive employees by May 1.
The Transport Commissioner said the department would soon bring four more routes — Shornur-Mannarcaud, Ottapalam-Palakkad , Cherppu-Irinjalakkuda and Vadanapilly-Manakkody — under its camera surveillance network.
