People displaced by connectivity projects for the Vallarpadam International Container Transshipment Terminal from places such as Moolampilly, Kothad, Vaduthala, Mulavukad, Cheranellore, Elamakkara, Edappally, Eloor, Manjummel and Kalamassery staged a protest on Saturday demanding rehabilitation.

Eight years

Saturday marked the eighth anniversary of their eviction, and a statement issued by the coordination committee for the evictees said only 38 of the 316 families affected by the project were able to build their houses in the land allotted to them.

Promise not kept

The statement said the government had gone back on its promise to provide the evicted families land with road connectivity and electricity. The government had also failed to provide jobs to the members of the affected families.

The government continued to take over land for various projects without respect for the people who had surrendered their land, the statement said. The coordination committee also appealed to the public to support their cause.
