45,320 new voters to exercise their franchise in Ernakulam district

The final voters’ list puts the strength of the electorate in the district spread across 14 Assembly constituencies at 24,71,515.

Of this, 12,09,314 are men and 12,62,200 women. In March, the count was 24,26,195 with 11,89,681 men and 12,36,514 women. As such, 45,320 new voters have got their names newly enrolled in the voters’ list.

Piravom with 1,99,651 voters has the most number of voters accounting for 1,02,981 women and 96,670 women. The constituency also has the most number of men and women voters. Ernakulam has the least number of voters at 1,53,884 with 78,579 men and 75,305 women.

The number of voters for the remaining 12 constituencies are as follows: Perumbavoor - 1,72, 897 (87,171 women and 85,726 men); Angamaly -1,63,530 (82,211 women and 81,319 men); Aluva - 1,76,344 (89,781 women, 86563 men); Kalamassery - 1,90,374 (98,076 women, 92,298 men); Paravur - 1,91,015 (98,864 women, 92,151 men); Vypeen - 1,64,055 (84,343 women, 79,712 men); Kochi - 1,71,215 (87,895 women, 83,320 men); Tripunithura - 1,98,003 (10,2185 women, 95,818 men); Thrikkakara - 1,81,025 (93,358 women, 87,666 men); Kunnathunadu - 1,72,383 (87,423 women, 84,960 men); Muvattupuzha - 1,77,765 (89,627 women, 88,138 men); Kothamangalam - 1,59,374 (79,706 women, 79,668 men). The sole transgender voter in the district is from Thrikkakara.

Model polling booths

The district will have five model polling booths each in all 14 Assembly constituencies in the election.

One of these booths in every constituency would be an all-women one controlled by women polling officials. District Collector M.G. Rajamanickam, who is also the district electoral officer, has declared an award to the returning officer arranging the best booth. He was addressing a meeting of returning officers held at the district collectorate in the presence of election observers.

The model polling booths will have seating facilities, toilet, drinking water, help desk, ramp, and wheelchair among other facilities. Returning officers would be empowered to put in place more facilities as they find necessary. The Collector has approved the report listing out the model polling booths in the district.

EVMs distributed

The distribution of Electronic Voting Machines has started at the district collectorate.

EVMs numbering 2,027 have been readied for deployment in the district in the election while another 284 have been kept on reserve.

Polling officials of various constituencies received the EVMs. Election Deputy Collector S. Rajeev supervised the distribution of EVMs. Perumbavoor constituency with 154 polling stations was issued 176 EVMs, Angamaly with 144 polling stations was given 164 EVMs, Aluva with 145 polling stations got 165 EVMs, Kalamassery with 150 polling stations was issued 171 EVMs, Paravur with 162 polling stations was given 185 EVMs, Vypeen with 138 polling stations was allotted 157 EVMs, and Kochi with 148 polling stations was given 169 EVMs.

In Tripunithura, the corresponding figure for polling stations and EVMs were 151 and 172, Ernakulam 122 and 139, Thrikkakara 147 and 168, Kunnathunadu 171 and 195, Piravom 134 and 153, Muvattupuzha 125 and 143, and Kothamangalam 136 and 155. The distribution of EVMs will continue on Wednesday.
