Thousands of children across the district walked in with a smile and several in tears when schools reopened after summer holidays on Wednesday. Also, tiny tots joined kindergarten sections and Class 1 in hundreds of schools.
The Government Higher Secondary School at Puthenthodu near Chellanam hosted the district-level ‘Praveshanotsavam’, an event organised by the Education Department to welcome children to schools in an atmosphere of celebration and joy.
A colourful rally was taken out from Kandakadavu junction in the morning. Members of student cadet police units in the city participated in the rally.
Meanwhile, teachers welcomed children and gifted sweets, time table cards, and books to them.
As many as 102 children joined the school for the academic year 2016-17. A dance performance based on a song penned by Sivadas Purameri and sung by M. Jayachandran was presented by students of Government Higher Secondary School, Puthenthope.
Better infrastructure
K.V. Thomas, MP, inaugurated the Praveshanotsavam. He urged everyone to do their bit for government schools, besides laying stress on the need to ensure adequate infrastructure on campuses.
K.J. Maxi, MLA, said confidence of the public in government schools was going up.
He also promised to take steps for the renovation of the playground at Puthenthodu school.
Actor Moly Kannamaly, who came with her grandchildren who are studying in the school, released Zero to Hero , a short film produced by Sarva Siksha Abhiyan and the Department of Public Instruction. She also rendered a song used in Chavittu Natakam.
Ernakulam district panchayat president Asha Sanal presided.
In good shape
Meanwhile, Education Department officials said necessary maintenance work had been done at all schools to ensure the safety of children during the monsoon season. Also, it instructed school managements to keep the premises clean and avoid water-logging on campuses.
Saplings distributed
Suchitwa Mission officials distributed caps, textbook wrappers, and saplings to various schools in the educational sub-districts of Aluva, Angamaly, Ernakulam, Mattancherry, North Paravur, Thripunithura, Vypeen, and Perumbavoor.
An official release said that Praveshanotsavams in the district had been plastic-free, as the school authorities had made it a point to use glass utensils for provision of water and steel plates for distributing snacks.
The aim of the initiative was to create awareness among students on protecting nature.
