Mini-lorry mows down three near Alappuzha

Three persons, including two women, were killed when an over-speeding mini-lorry lost control near Champakulam on the Alappuzha-Changanassery road here on Monday.

According to the police, Bijumon, 35, of Champakulam, and his wife Anitha, 30, were waiting on their two-wheeler near the Onnamkara bridge to cross the road towards their residence nearby when the mini-lorry hit the bike from behind. The lorry then crashed into a waiting shed on the roadside, where it ran over Ponnamma, 52, wife of Ponnumani of Mithrakari, who was waiting for a bus there.

While Bijumon was killed on the spot, Anitha, and Ponnamma, died on the way to hospital. Bijumon and Anitha are survived by son Sanjay, 12, and daughter Anu, 6, while Ponnamma is survived by her husband, daughter Sandhya and son, Santosh.

The lorry driver, Siddique of Nedumbassery, has been taken into custody.
