Basic facilities like toilets were not provided

Camps of migrant workers in seven places in the district were shut down for failing to comply with rules set by the Labour and Health departments.

Two camps in Perumbavoor, three in Ramamangalam and two in Vengoor, were closed down for unhygienic conditions and notices were served to 62 owners of the camps.

Officials of the Health and Labour departments and the police inspected 134 camps in the district. Most of the camps did not have basic amenities like drinking water and toilets. Workers were cramped into tiny rooms, where they cooked and slept.

District Medical Officer Haseena Mohammed, Dr. Santha Kumari (RCH Officer), P.N. Sreenivasan, district health officer and junior health inspectors were part of the squads that conducted the raids, as part of Operation Safe Home to check the spread of communicable diseases.

The camp owners have been given a deadline to improve the living conditions and get them inspected.
