The Kochi city police on Tuesday arrested a West Bengal native in connection with the murder of a migrant labourer in Pottakuzhi. The accused was identified as Neeraj Chetri alias Robin, 29, a native of Jalpaiguri.

Officials said Neeraj was arrested in connection with the murder of Deepakar Bajar, an employee of a meat shop. Another worker, Raju, was also taken into custody, but the police have not recorded his arrest.

The trio, employed at the meat shop near Pottakuzhi church, were staying on the first floor of the building of the meat shop. On Monday night, Deepakar picked up an argument with Robin over playing cards, which eventually culminated in the attack.

Robin stabbed Deepakar on his stomach and neck, leading to his death.

Raju, who had gone out, found Deepakar lying in a pool of blood on his return and informed the matter to the shop owner over phone.

Deepakar’s body has been kept at Medical College Hospital, Aluva.
