The Government Railway Police (GRP) have arrested a person on charge of stealing valuables from train commuters sleeping at night.

The accused person, identified as Sadam Hussain, 24, hailing from Samaguri in Nagaon district of Assam, was tracked down and picked up from the platform of the Aluva railway station on Thursday evening. He mainly targeted women commuters, said GRP officials.

The arrest was made after officials noticed a similar modus operandi in three separate cases. Following this, a team including Deputy Superintendent of Railway Police Xavier Sebastian; Inspector of Railway Police K.A. Muhammed; Ernakulam Railway Police Station Head Officer P.R. Santhosh Kumar; and Additional Sub Inspectors K.J. Thomson and Antony, launched a probe with the aid of CCTV footage.

During the interrogation, Hussain allegedly admitted to have committed all three crimes. In the first case, three sovereigns of gold was stolen from a resident of Kollam while she was travelling in the Jayanti Janata Express. Two more women fell victim in close succession.

Hussain was eventually caught after he was seen alighting in suspicious circumstances from the same trains as taken by the victims. Officials said that the accused already faced similar charges at the Kozhikode railway police station.
