MGU amends B.Tech internal assessment rules

Candidates can now appear for improvement exams

Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) has amended its B.Tech. course (2010 admission) regulations to permit eligible candidates to improve their internal assessment score across semesters.

Under the regulations prevailing since 2010, no candidate was allowed to improve the score in practical examination and internal assessment.

With the new amendment, those who have not passed in any subject or course on account of shortfall in internal assessment marks will be eligible to appear for improvement examination.

Earlier, candidates who had not scored the pass minimum marks in the examination had to repeat the respective semesters as the seminar and project in the seventh and eighth semesters had only internal evaluation.

An official order issued by the varsity, incorporating the recommendations of an expert committee appointed by the academic council, pointed out that candidates would be permitted to improve the internal assessment marks if they were either declared passed in a course or had obtained 75% marks in the internal assessment (35 out of 50).

Candidates who have scored 35 marks in the internal assessment should have scored 40% marks in the university examination to meet the passing criteria of 75 marks out of 150 in the course / subject, and hence allowing them to improve their internal assessment marks will serve no purpose.

Candidates will only be eligible for the marks required to pass (75/150) irrespective of the marks obtained by them in the re-examination. Besides, only one attempt will be available to them to improving their internal assessment score.

The committee observed that a candidate, who had a very low score in the internal assessment and obtained reasonably high grades in the university examination repeatedly, might not be declared passed. Such candidates, who have demonstrated improvement in subject domain knowledge, will be given an opportunity to improve their internal assessment score.

The minimum eligibility of pass in any B.Tech programme is 40% marks in the university examination (40 out of 100) and 50% marks in the university examination and internal assessment together (75 marks out of 150).
