The joint national convention of trade unions in Central public sector units will be held at Renewal Centre at Kaloor here on Sunday. A release issued here said that the convention would chalk out the future course of agitation for protecting public sector units.

Sanjeeva Reddy (INTUC), Tapan Sen (CITU), Mahadevan (AITUC), Thampan Thomas (HMS), and Swadesh Dev Roye (CITU) are attending the convention. The release said that a “big sale” of public sector units was on under the Narendra Modi government. The disinvestment of BEML was stalled following a strong agitation launched by workers. But the Centre is moving fast with the disinvestment of Hindustan Newsprint and Hindustan Life Care in Kerala.

The NITI Aayog has prepared a list of public sector units that will be put up for disinvestment, it added. According to the release, the number of permanent employees in Central public sector units has come down from 21.71 lakh in 1991 to 11.34 lakh in 2017. More than 10 lakh workers had lost their jobs in Central public sector units in the last 10 years.
