: The Vigilance and Anti-corruption Bureau (VACB), which has been probing the racket involving police officers at Kalamassery station and the medical seat scam accused Kavitha Pillai, on Thursday approached the vigilance director for sanction to register a case against the accused.

Permission sought

“Preliminary investigations established evidence of financial transactions between the lady and a couple of policemen. Based on this, a report has been sent to the vigilance director, seeking permission to register a First Information Report and investigate,” said K.M. Antony, SP, VACB.

Upon receiving the nod, an investigation to trace all the persons involved in the racket will be carried out and a final report will be submitted to the Thrissur vigilance court within six months.

“The scope of the investigation will include the number of persons involved and the number of cases they have settled this way, among others,” the official added.

Earlier, the vigilance team quizzed the accused, who could not explain the incriminating circumstances. The probe, however, was yet to establish that the demand for Rs. 2 lakh by Ms. Pillai was made on behalf of these policemen.

The case pertains to a petition filed by Geetha, a native of Malappuram that Poulose, a grade sub-inspector of Kalamassery police station, and another official with the shadow police wing accepted a bribe of Rs. 18,000 through Ms. Pillai. The complainant’s son, Adityan (20), was arrested by the Kalamassery police in a ganja case along with five other persons on February 4.

Though Adityan was given bail in the case, it was alleged that Ms. Pillai had further demanded Rs. 2 lakh for settling the case. The complainant had also handed over a CD containing recorded telephonic conversation with Kavitha.

A few days into its investigation, the VACB received another complaint from one Ansal, a resident of Edappally, which alleged that the police officers withdrew Rs.12,000 from his bank account through a friend when he was in the lock-up at Kalamassery police station.

Upon receiving the nod, an investigation to trace all the persons involved in the racket will be carried out and a final report will be submitted to the Thrissur vigilance court.
